Fashion Feature: "Secretive Style"

Name: Kaitlin Fontenot (or Kait, for short!)  Age: 24
Twitter: @SecretiveStyle
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
Profession: Marketing/Sales

Hobbies: (obviously shopping) but I think most people would be surprised to find out that my favorite hobby is working out, running on the lakefront with my husband and our 7 month old Golden Retriever, being with my family and friends, and attending church - not necessarily what you ever hear from fashion bloggers.

Future dream(s): I'd love to own my own boutique (and am currently planning it!)
Do you have any clubs, groups, or organizations that you are a part of? I'm a proud Alpha Chi Omega alumni!

Describe your blog: Secretive Style is a place where you can find my personal style preferences and beauty trends that I love. I usually don't wear big labels so most of my outfits never cost over $100. You can usually find Forever 21, Dillard's, Jessica Simpson, Melie Bianco, and Gap on SS. Occasionally I'll show a Coach purse or something special to me that is a little pricey. I will never show an item that I wouldn't normally wear. So, even if you see a "℅" in front of the item I'm wearing, it's because I ACTUALLY liked it. I won't accept product from sponsors that I don't like or stand by.

What made you decide to start a blog and how long have you been at it? I decided to start a blog in September of 2011 because I went on www.freefashioninternships.com and saw that most virtual editorial internships requested that you have some sort of editorial/blog experience. I then decided to start blogging. At the time, I was a student worker at the university I attended and had a computer available 24/7 while I was working so I figured why not? I sat at work and played with Polyvore and posted various lookbooks. It wasn't until about a year ago that I actually started posting my own personal outfit photos.

Who would you say is your target audience? My target audience is women (and girls) ages 16-35 with a moderate income of at least $35,000. I feel like I show an affordable wardrobe that's maintainable at that income. In college, I worked a part-time job at minimum wage without any help from my parents. I learned quickly that I wasn't going to be able to afford designer labels.

What is the one thing you love most about blogging? I honestly love meeting new people. I recently started a blogging help series to show women how to achieve what they wanted out of their blog. I get so many emails and tweets asking questions about how to start a blog, how to take outfit photos, etc and I loved the feedback I receive from the "blog help" posts. It makes me smile to see how many lives I'm affecting in a positive way. I've also received emails commending me for being open about being a Christian and that makes me extremely happy.

What do you look for in a fabulous blog that would make you follow it? I always look for originality. I love to read the personal stories of other bloggers. Katie from www.RunningonHappiness.blogspot.com is really amazing at doing that. She lets her readers really get a feel for her personal life. I hate going to a blog where it seems like they threw together a post extremely fast and put the affiliate links. They don't appreciate my reading the blog, they simply want me to click the links so they can get paid. As someone who thoroughly is in it for the enjoyment of my readers and not the money, I love seeing the same from others.

What challenges have you had when blogging? I'll be honest: the biggest challenge I've had to overcome is jealousy. The saying "the grass is always greener on the other side" has never rang more true than since I've started blogging. Honestly, when your day isn't going that great and you're feeling really down and you receive an email from a huge blogger with their newest post of an outfit that clearly costs over $500, it can do some serious mental damage. I've had to learn when to cut off the social media and stop comparing myself to others. I'm here to be different, not like all of those other bloggers.

Do you have any future plans for your blog? I simply hope to expand it. My blog is almost like my baby! I love DulceCandy and hope to one day be on the path that she's on with a boutique and all. That's my ultimate goal!

What do you consider to be the keys to the perfect outfit? I think the keys to a perfect outfit is a smile, posture, fit, and confidence. Without those things, you'll look insanely awkward. You can have the ugliest outfit in the world but a good smile and confidence can change it around instantly.

What is your daily routine, when dressing? I usually have a specific item in mind that I've been loving or that's new and I'll work around that. So say I have a new pair of blue pants, I'll grab those and the first top that stands out in my head gets pulled off the rack. I always go pants, then top, then shoes, then jewelry.

How do you come about material for your blog? I love to browse through Pinterest and other bloggers' sites to get inspiration. I'll never copy their outfit but if I see they have a striped pencil skirt that they are wearing with brown boots and I happen to own a striped pencil skirt and brown boots, I'll work with it and try to find a new way to wear them. I also love to look at People Style Watch, Lucky Magazine, In Touch, and Life & Style for celeb attire.

If you could cover one show for fashion week, who's would it be and for what season?  Trina Turk all the way for every season. Her sense of style is impeccable. I'm the ultimate girlie girl with a love for stripes, patterns, and intense colors and designs and Trina Turk has the ULTIMATE sense of style.

What is the compliment you most frequently get? I get an insane amount of compliments on my hair, both on my blog and in real life. Most people want to know how it's so straight (naturally) or who colors it (Amanda M. at One by One in New Orleans!)

Who is your fashion icon(s)? Rachel Zoe, Briggite Bardot, Miranda Kerr, Olivia Palermo, Jessica Simpson

What do you stand for, or against (in fashion or in life)? I stand for women standing up for themselves, hard work, happiness, and confidence. I am absolutely against judging others and bragging.

What is your greatest source of inspiration? Pinterest all the way!

Do you have a fashion ahhhh hah moment? I would have to say when I interviewed Jeremiah Brent for an internship I really felt like "wow, I've made it!" Which, I honestly hadn't even began. I just got lucky! But really, he was a doll and I was SO intensely excited to interview him. He kept commenting on my accent and how much he loved it!

What style magazines do you read? People Style Watch, Life & Style, Lucky, In Style

What is your favorite fashion movie or show, and why? Clueless because it takes me back to a time where I actually thought high school and college would be like the movie. I was obviously wrong!

What do you spend the most money on? (accessories, beauty products, shoes..etc) I spend the most money on pants and tops. I feel like women on a budget can get away with owning only a few pairs of shoes. If you have the necessities like brown wedges, black wedges, nude pumps, and black pumps you can always make an outfit out of those. But if I only own a pair of black jeans, I can't really make a million different outfits. Obviously, when I'm not on a budget, shoes and beauty products are my main splurge.

What is your favorite quotation? (or make your own) "You can never be overdressed or overeducated."

What is it that you want your readers get from viewing & reading your blog, what do you want them to remember about you? I want them to remember that I'm myself. I'm not who I only wish to be on the internet. Most of my closest friends and family members read my blog so they'd call me out if I were pretending to be someone I'm not. I try to get that across in many of my blog posts so that I can maybe relate to a few of my female readers. I want them to remember how I always respond to emails and comments and that I'm always helpful.

Are you a trendy shopper or do you go for longevity? Longevity all the way! I have a pair of black jeans that I bought at Charlotte Russe. They fit AMAZINGLY, surprisingly and I've owned them for almost three years. I wear them all the time. The day they give out is the day I cry all day long! Also, many of the coats I own, I've owned for literally years. The pink one I have been wearing on my blog is actually from my sophomore year of high school..seven years ago! It's that amazing and was $85. My mom bought it for me for my 17th birthday!

What is your definition of a Lady? One who has the best manners. And, by manners, I mean you know how to eat a proper meal, you know how to speak to someone, you shake hands with those you meet (and firmly!), you are friendly to everyone you meet, and you don't participate in drama. A lady carries herself with poise, grace, and confidence and she ALWAYS has a smile on her face in public and in private.

Favorite designers, brands, & stores:
Stores: Forever 21, Dillard's, Zara, H&M, Gap
Designers/Brands: Jessica Simpson, Trina Turk, L*Space, Gianni Bini, Steve Madden, Ralph Lauren, Vince Camuto..there are so many!

If you could style any celeb who would it be and why? I'd style Giulianna Rancic because she's determined and motivated. She worked her way up from nothing and has made a spot for herself in the limelight. She's definitely someone I look up to and I'd love to style her and get to talk with her about life.

Tell us something random about yourself. I can bench press 90 pounds!! Haha, I think that's about as random as you can get with fashion bloggers. Oh, and I used to wear XL tshirts (they obviously were EXTREMELY too big for me) and tube socks when I was in elementary school. I haven't always been into style! I also like to nerd out and play Call of Duty with my husband when we get bored.

Name a bad habit that you have. Biting my fingernails!!!! I'm battling it day-by-day. It's an ongoing process!

What is your fashion pet peeve? I can't stand clothes that are too big or too tight! Get them tailored!

If you could give one piece of style advice, what would it be? Smile!
